Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei

Christ the King is a massive monument that represents Jesus Christ, situated in Almada (Lisbon). it is inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. It is deliberated by the Portuguese dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. This should be a must for everyone that are planning to spend some days in the capital of Portugal.

How to reach it?

Christ the King or Cristo Rei in Portuguese is a massive monument. It can be seen from almost all over the city. It is localized on the other side of the river Tago. To reach this monument you have two different options: crossing de Ponte 25 de Abril or directly crossing the river through the ferry. The first option can be covered by train or bus taken in Roma-Areeiro. The second one may be covered by a ferry taken in Cais do Sodre. In both options once arrived on the other side of the river, more precisely in Almada you have to walk around 20-30 minutes.
The Santuario is open every day from 10 to 18. The Santuario is open every day from 10 to 18. Outside the building, you can find one of the best viewpoints of the whole Libon

In fact, the monument faces the most famous bridge in Lisbon 25 the April bridge.

At the bottom of the monument, you have the best view of Lisbon on the 25 April bridge. If you want to admire the bridge in all its majesty you have to come here and enjoy the landscape. The sunset you can see from here is stunning, in winter the sun disappears behind the ocean, creating a beautiful play of shadows that highlight the bridge and the ships passing in the river. If you look to the left you can admire the immense Atlantic Ocean, but if you look to the right you can still see the Tagus River and you can see in the distance the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the longest bridge in Europe, which connects Scavèm and Montijo in the interior of Lisbon.

View from Cristo-Rei

At the bottom of the monument, there is a church where people can follow the Christian mass.
The monument is open and people can climb to the top until the foot of Christ for 6€ per person. The view is not much different from the bottom of the monument but if it is the first time in Lisbon I would suggest you this experience, especially in the sunset time I would say that is worth it
